After a four-year pandemic break, the International Fission Yeast Meeting finally returned, this time in Hiroshima. Great talks and, as always, a wonderfully open and supportive community, with lots of unpublished data being shared and discussed. Abubakar and Sigurd presented our massive genetic screening project and Lem2’s role in RNA degradation. Dana Kennedy from Bassem Al-Sady’s lab and Merle Skribbe from Marc Bühler’s lab also presented exciting new findings. In fact, discussions with Merle at the meeting sparked what would become our next collaboration.
A definite highlight was the conference dinner, which started with the traditional opening of a sake barrel with wooden hammers — accompanied by a few well-aimed sake splashes into Sir Paul Nurse’s face.
